2012 in Photo's

18th December 2012
Well it’s that time of year where photographers start to think about their best pictures from the last 12 months and people in general reflect upon the year that has just been. We’ve had a big year in the UK in 2012 with the Olympics, Paralympics and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations but I wasn’t able to get to see any of them first hand, I had to make do with coverage on the TV and very good it was too.

So, rather than select a set of images that I feel are my best from the year I thought I’d share 100 images that map out the year I’ve just had. Being primarily a wedding photographer the majority of the images were taken at weddings but I’ve also included one or two others that were purely taken as a reminder of a moment in my life and for one reason or another those stand out in my memory.

My year usually starts with a family ski-ing holiday and so you’ll see an image from that holiday included. Now I’ve no idea who it is in the image but I remember who it should be. I was ski-ing with ‘the lads’ one afternoon, ‘the lads’ being my two sons and the two sons of our very good friends and we tend to have a good laugh when we spend times like this. Equipped with only my ‘pocket’ camera when Luke said he was going to do this jump on his snowboard I told him to wait and I’d try to take his picture. I positioned myself and shouted to the lads to tell Luke to go for it, I heard a whoosh and grabbed this fantastic photo only to see Luke come off the jump as I was admiring my work! Another boarder had shot down the slope and it was his photo I took but it gave us all a laugh and it’s that memory that sticks with me. That’s what photography is all about, creating something that evokes memories.

Other individual images you will find here include motorsports, fashion and holidays where for one reason or another I’ve taken an image or series of images and they stand out for me. My youngest son and I are both keen on motorsports and so we go to Oulton Park each year to watch British Touring car racing and the British Superbikes, we have a great day together and try to capture some of the action and so there’s a couple of these included. When I’m not photographing weddings I try to keep my hand in by taking on fashion shoots and this year I’ve had some great results with a superb fashion designer but the images are not for release to the general public just yet and so you’ll see them in a blog post in the new year. What you will see here though are a few images from shoots I’ve done in my spare time throughout the year with some excellent models. Lastly I’ve included a couple of images from our summer holidays to Tuscany, what a beautiful place that is! I’ve got lots of images from the holiday but the one’s I’ve shared with you here are special for various reasons. There’s a farmhouse on a hill that I visited for 3 mornings at sunrise to get the image I wanted, it took some getting but we all love the result. There’s oil and vinegar jugs on a table at lunch, nothing special you may think but it was a memorable day in a small town and the food in this restaurant was excellent. Lastly I’ve included an image of one of the old winding streets of Montepulciano, which is where we were staying. The town is full of photogenic streets like this but this image is special because the lady walking down the street is not an Italian model on a fashion shoot, it’s my beautiful wife Lesley perusing the fine shops of the town. Again this is not a set up shot, it is how it was and that’s how I like my photography and how I try to capture weddings.

Speaking of weddings, many of this set of 100 images were taken at weddings I’ve had the privilege of photographing this year. There's everything from the little details to portraits of the bride and groom and even the occasional image from pre-weddingg shoots that we like to do. I don’t intend on explaining the story behind all the images but they do all form part of a story and I hope they bring back wonderful memories of the day for the lovely couples whose big day it was. As well as weddings I’ve included a couple of prom images that I took for some great friends of ours, it was a typical wet summers day but I think we overcame the weather and produced some great images.

Lastly, 2012 saw our eldest celebrate her 21st birthday and so the final image is one I took of her before we set off out for a family meal.

So those words but more importantly this set of pictures summarise 2012 for me, if you’ve got this far and viewed all the images then thank you for taking the time and I hope you’ve enjoyed them.

One last thing, if you can spare a minute or two then I’d love to hear your thoughts on these images, which one stands out for you and why?

So that’s 2012, we’ve got weddings in 2013 to look forward to now along with many other projects in the planning stage so keep checking back to see what we’ve been up to.

With that I’d like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and best wishes for the New Year.
