12 From 22

A selection of 12 sporting images that I've taken in 2022, one from each month of the year along with the story behind the shot

It’s the time of year again where we look back on the last 12 months and look forward to what’s to come in the new year, so I’ve selected a favourite image per month from the sporting events I covered in 2022 and present them here with a little explanation why I selected them. Selecting only one per month was really difficult and they’re not necessarily what I feel are my best shots but for one reason or another they are memorable to me.

I hope you enjoy them and feel free to leave a comment at the end

My sporting events in 2022 started in January with Round 6 of the HSBC UK Cyclo-Cross National Trophy Series at Broughton Park in Skipton. It was a great event with lots of mud and some fantastic racing, run away victories in the Senior Men and Senior Women’s races from Thomas Mein and Anna Kay but this battle between Hope Factory Racing teammates caught my eye in this image for the colours and sense of speed and determination between the two.

February saw me back at the Bolton Whites Hotel for the MTK Fight Night where many of the North’s best fighters were in action. There was great action all evening, but I’ve chose this image of Doncaster’s Josh Padley landing a huge right on the jaw of Brayan Mairena from Nicaragua. This was a battle to the end with Josh taking the points decision and the Yorkshireman is definitely one to watch for the future, he had three more fights this year and is currently sitting on nine pro wins without a loss.

As a big motorsport fan, I couldn’t miss the closed roads North West Stages rally held in March, what a fantastic event. Not my best shot but having followed his career since the early days in Grizedale Forest I had to choose a picture of local lad Chris Ingram who is super talented but doesn’t get the opportunities he deserves in my opinion; motorsport is sadly very money orientated. He’s the FIA European Rally Champion and hopefully one day he’ll get a shot at the WRC. He won the North West Stages in his Skodia Fabia Rally 2 Evo despite a couple of hairy moments and I wish him all the best for 2023.

April was a busy month with local cycling time trials starting, amateur MMA and the Oakenclough road races but I’ll stick with motorsports and select a shot from the British Superbike test day at Oulton Park. Shooting motorsport is usually difficult without media access so I chose to visit a test day where there’s not as many spectators, it turned out to be a good day. I tried various areas around the track but have chosen this image of Rory Skinner exiting Druids corner, all action out of the seat with his front wheel in the air!

A big event for me came in May with The Tour Series Grand Final in Manchester, the weather was great, and hundreds of spectators lined Deansgate cheering the riders on lap after lap. After photographing Sammi Stuart competing in local crits over the years, 2022 was the year she came into her own and she was the standout star for me. This image sums up the race for me, colourful and all action with Sammie giving her all out at the front. She didn’t quite get the win, that went to another local star Emma Jeffers by a fraction of a second and Emma is another girl with a big future ahead of her.

June saw the British Cycling National Championships staged in Dumfries; I could only manage to get there for the Time Trials but boy the action was first class. I took loads of great shots throughout the day but this one of Leo Hayter on his way to the Under 23 Men’s title hopefully portrays the speed they were going.

July was full of motorsports action and picking a single image from the Barbon Hill Climb and the Helsington Taylor Trophy Scramble was difficult. Having raced ‘Schoolboy Scrambles’ for many years as a kid it was great to get back to a classic event, see bikes like those I used to race and even meet a few lads I used to race with. He’s a bit older than me so thankfully I never had to race against him but a local lad by the name of Mark Fulton was an amazing talent on a bike and used to regularly clean up, things haven’t changed, and he was out at the front again at Helsington. Here he is still putting on the style on his CR500 Honda.

The Salt Ayre circuit at Lancaster is where many local riders cut their teeth with crit racing and I try to get there when I can to capture the action and spot potential stars of the future. This shot of Rachel Brown was taken as she competed in the Women’s 2/3/4 race in August, Rachel is an Elite Duathlete and has competed in the world championships finishing 12th so it was great to see her in action at Salt Ayre.

September was another difficult month to select a single image, but it had to be this one of brothers Sam and Tom Stephenson. These are two of the nicest lads you could wish to meet, and I had the honour of taking some shots of then when they were selected to represent GB in the Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships in Denmark. I didn’t manage to get to Denmark, but this image sums up the fantastic atmosphere at the top of The Struggle Hill Climb in Ambleside. Sam on the right had already completed his climb so he took of his shoes and ran alongside Tom shouting encouragement as he approached the finish line. Tom had a fantastic ride to finish 3rd and this is probably one of my favourite shots of the year.

October turned out to be a bit of a quiet month, but I was asked to cover a couple of Cross Fit events at a local gym, Industry 13. This was a bit new to me, but I thoroughly enjoyed capturing the action at this Halloween Fancy Dress event and hopefully this shot shows it all going on. I’m hoping to cover more of these in 2023.

I’m a big Mixed Martial Arts fan and in November I was lucky enough to once again cover Europe’s biggest MMA promotors show in Manchester, Cage Warriors 146. I’ve picked this shot carefully as I appreciate the sport may not be to everyone’s liking but this fight between Jordy Bakkes and Antonio Sheldon was an absolute war and must have been fight of the night, this was the end of the fight which resulted in a split decision draw.

I ended the year as I started with two cyclocross events in December, my local NWCCA league event in Ulverston and Round 5 of the British Cycling National Trophy Series in Skipton. Both were bitterly cold and icy but as the Senior Men’s race started in Skipton, we also had sleet and rain to add to the competitors’ problems. Despite the tricky conditions there was fantastic racing all day and this shot of Corran Carrick-Anderson on his way to victory in the Senior Men’s Race shows what they had to contend with!

So that rounds off my sporting year and I’m already looking forward to what 2023 may bring starting with the British Cycling Cyclo-Cross National Championships in January, I can’t wait.

I hope you enjoyed that recap of my year and say hello if you spot me at any events that you’re at in 2023.

Best Wishes for the New Year.
